Corrective Jaw Surgery

or orthognathic surgery is a procedure that is performed for patients whose jaws are misaligned. In some cases your orthodontist can correct this issue without jaw surgery but in more severe cases your orthodontist will work with Dr. Robinson to rectify your misalignment.

When the upper and lower jaws do not meet or come together appropriately it can cause many problems including:

  • difficulty chewing, biting or swallowing

  • poor oral hygiene

  • impaired speech

  • unfavorable facial appearance

  • inability to close the lips

  • snoring or obstructive sleep apnea

  • receding chin

  • increased risk of dental caries and gum disease

Collaboration

Following a thorough evaluation of the teeth, radiographs, bite, and facial anatomy Dr. Robinson will collaborate with your orthodontist on a treatment plan to fit your specific needs. The total treatment time including orthodontics can take anywhere from months to years to complete.

Surgery is done on the upper and lower jaw or chin depending on the misalignment. This type of treatment can significantly improve function, facial appearance, overall health, well-being and self-confidence.
